The wait for one of Milwaukee’s most anticipated restaurant openings of 2026 is nearly over.

Il Ponte, the New York-style Italian restaurant from James Beard Award-winning Chef Adam Siegel and his wife and business partner Daria Aitken-Siegel, is slated to open Tuesday, Sept. 15 on the ground floor of Northwestern Mutual’s North Building, 818 E. Mason St.

The restaurant will be located just steps from the couple’s acclaimed Lupi & Iris, which opened in 2022. But despite its proximity and commitment to food and hospitality, Il Ponte promises to be a decidedly different restaurant.

The new concept takes inspiration from the uncomplicated Italian-American food that Aitken-Siegel, a native New Yorker whose family has roots in Naples, grew up eating.

That means high-quality ingredients, housemade pastas, classic red sauces and dishes that rely less on embellishment and more on letting ingredients speak for themselves.

“We love Milwaukee and the people who live here. It’s why we want to bring them together and offer the best possible service and experience in the city,” said Aitken-Siegel. “Il Ponte is a place where our residents can spend time together and know they’ll be taken care of.”

But now we know considerably more about what that experience will look like.  In a few words: more casual, but no less thoughtful

At more than 7,000 square feet, Il Ponte will seat 155 guests and offer a more casual, everyday alternative to Lupi & Iris. The restaurant will feature an open kitchen, private dining areas and bar seating, along with breakfast and grab-and-go offerings.

A patio is also in the plans, although guests will likely have to wait until 2027 to experience it.

What will it look like?

Aitken-Siegel designed the restaurant herself, employing a bold color palette, eclectic decor and unexpected touches of humor. Guests will also find hidden references to the restaurant’s mascot throughout the space.

Local touches include custom wood trim and finishes from ThreeSixty and custom tabletops created by The Urban Craftsman. Milwaukee-based Eppstein Uhen Architects served as architect for the project, with Oxeland Group serving as general contractor.

The goal is a restaurant that feels lively and bustling without becoming overwhelmingly noisy, a place equally suited to a meal with friends or a casual bite after work.

The name itself plays into that idea.

Il Ponte means “the bridge” in Italian, a literal reference to the skywalk connecting Northwestern Mutual’s North Building to its Tower & Commons. But for the Siegels, it also represents the ability of food to bridge cultures, communities and people.

What is New York-style Italian?

That might still be the biggest question surrounding Il Ponte.

Fortunately, we’ve now had a taste.

In April, at a Taste of Il Ponte dinner at Lupi & Iris, Siegel offered guests a preview of several dishes representative of what diners can expect from the forthcoming restaurant. Three dishes, including a Sunday Salad, Lasagna al Forno and a freeform take on tiramisu.

Three dishes certainly can’t tell us everything about Il Ponte.

But they did provide a clearer picture of what Siegel and Aitken-Siegel mean when they talk about New York-style Italian: familiar food, thoughtfully made, with good ingredients and little need for unnecessary flourishes.

Who will be in the kitchen?

At the kitchen's helm will be Il Ponte Executive Chef Angel Otero, former chef de cuisine at Lupi & Iris. He'll be accompanied by Executive Pastry Chef Courtney Beyer, also a Lupi & Iris alum.

In addition, another familiar Milwaukee hospitality veteran will be lending her talents to the restaurant. Bartolotta Restaurants alum and former Harbor House manager Samantha Lyons will take on the role of General Manager at Il Ponte.

For Siegel, the opening represents the latest chapter in a career that has included leadership roles at more than a dozen Milwaukee-area restaurants as well as kitchens in Chicago, San Francisco, Washington, D.C., and Imola, Italy.

Lupi & Iris, which he and Aitken-Siegel opened in May 2022, went on to become a 2023 James Beard Award finalist for Best New Restaurant.

Il Ponte will be among the first major pieces of Northwestern Mutual’s $500 million modernization of its downtown campus to come online. The North Building itself is expected to welcome employees in early 2027.

And come Sept. 15, Milwaukee diners should finally get their chance to cross the bridge.
